Cowry Calabash

Kenyan Percussion Instrument covered with Cowry Shells.

£19.99

A great unique gift idea from HandcraftedUK!

An authentic Cowry Calabash imported from Kenya. This African musical instrument is handmade from gourd from the calabash plant. After picking, the gourd is hollowed out and dried so that the instrument can resonate with a beautifully percussive sound. The instrument is further decorated with cowries which are the shells of marine snails found in tropical waters. The sound of the shells vibrating against the gourd really is unique!

Centuries ago cowry shells were a means of currency for people in Kenya. They would use the shells during negotiations and bartering. The shells are also used for African jewellery as symbolisms of wealth and fertility.

This ethnic musical instrument would make an excellent gift to give to someone who likes unusual hand made items.
It would also be appreciated by those with an interest in African instruments.

Measures 26cm (10") in height by 16cm (6") in diameter. This is just one of the lovely unique gifts available from HandcraftedUK. For more gift ideas please take a look around our store. You're sure to find the perfect gift for that special occasion!
