![]() | We're officially Fair Trade! In September 2010, HandcraftedUK was accepted into the BAFTS retailer scheme. BAFTS (The British Association for Fair Trade Shops) requires their members to meet a number of fair trade criteria before they are accepted. Members must prove they source the majority of their products from fair trade suppliers and manufacturers. This has always been of prime importance to us and now we have official recognition for our efforts! |
So, what is fair trade? Fair trade seeks for international equality between traders. It contributes to sustainable development by demanding better trading and working conditions to producers and workers. Support of fair trade policies include; paying a fair price to producers for their goods, supporting producers in social and environmental projects, gender equality in pay and working conditions, committing to long term relationships to promote stability and security and, campaigning to highlight the injustice of international trade which places profit above human rights and the environment.
So, how does HandcraftedUK support fair trade? As mentioned previously, we aim to use only fair trade suppliers and manufacturers. The majority of our suppliers are also members of the BAFTS scheme and therefore share our fair trade beliefs.
When importing our own goods from manufacturers we ensure we strictly adhere to the fair trade principles ensuring that the producers are paid a fair price for their products, working conditions are good and, as we have worked with our manufacturers for a number of years, we are committed to long term relationships with them.
The products sourced from fair trade suppliers are clearly marked throughout the site.
