Introduced to Puerto Rico by the Arawak Indians, the Guiro has been used in traditional Puerto Rican Music ever since. Played usually by the singer in a band, the guiro works by moving the stick up and down the instrument in straight strokes.

This guiro, imported from Peru, is made from gourd. It has been hand-painted with many traditional Peruvian designs depicting various different South American animals and, carved into the guiro are stars which have been painted white.
